Combined knowledge and creativity for high quality exhibits [September 6, 2018] <YU President Sur Gil-soo giving congratulatory address at the 65th Architecture Graduation Exhibition> The YU School of Architecture held its 65 Graduation Exhibition. This graduation exhibition that was held at the basement gallery of the YU Cheonma Art Center on September 4 was joined by 145 students in the three majors of architecture, architectural engineering and architectural design. The graduation exhibition of the YU School of Architecture was the largest in Korean universities and was judged to be of the highest caliber in terms of the quality of works. At this exhibit, students of the YU School of Architecture presented futuristic architecture that could be used in various fields based on their knowledge and experience in their majors, while also putting on exhibits their works and discourses that give a glimpse into the future of architecture. In particular, the ‘2020 YU EXPO PAVILION’ project, which was the outcome of a workshop that students worked on during the summer break, was introduced at the entrance. It attracted huge interest from visitors by proposing nonlinear structures at Cheonmaro using advanced design software, 3D printers and VR technologies. At the opening ceremony on the 4th, YU President Sur Gil-soo, School of Architecture Alumni Association Chairman Kim Cheol-gyu and heads of architectural organizations of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and other important figures attended the event to encourage the students. This exhibition will be held until the 7th. YU School of Architecture Dean Kwon Jong-wook said, “Students combined the knowledge they learned from studying in their majors for several years with creativity, and thus the quality of the works are improving by the year. I am convinced that such achievements will also be useful in their professional careers after graduation.” Meanwhile, in addition to the graduation exhibition, the YU School of Architecture has been hosting the ‘30th Alumni Anniversary Event’ during the same time every year. This year, alumni from the class of ‘88 working around the nation visited YU and made a donation to the development fund. They gave scholarships to their juniors at YU and spared no efforts in giving professional advice following graduation.

Produced ‘citizen safety’ video together with the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency and Gyeongsan Police Station Video Club REC made a total of three videos including the illegal filming prevention video ‘The Third Eye’ Received certification of appreciation from the Gyeongsan Police Station [September 3, 2018] YU students became guardians of the safety of local residents. The video club, REC (Recording Essential Crew) comprised of students in the YU Department of Media and Communication and the Department of Visual Communication Design produced videos together with the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency and the Gyeongsan Police Station to promote community safety and police activities. REC produced a total of three videos from last year to July of this year at the request of Gyeongsan Police Station. The first video produced in the summer of last year was titled ‘The Third Eye’ made to prevent illegal filming. As illegal filming became a huge social issue in the past few years, the video produced at the time drew a lot of attention. ‘The Third Eye’ is a one minute film depicting illegal filming that occurs at subway stations, rest rooms and locker rooms, and punishment for such actions. This was produced to raise social awareness that sometimes view illegal filming as a simple joke. <YU Video Club REC> The second video was titled ‘Gyeongsan Sheriff’. This video shares information on the crime-prevention facilities installed for the safety of the community by Gyeongsan Police Station such as Eagle Security Lamp and crime-prevention mirrors. It promotes crime-prevention facilities that citizens may not have known about, while also giving information on practical ways to use the crime-prevention facilities in the case of emergencies in the four-minute video. The most recently produced third video is titled ‘Register Desired Patrol’ that promotes the ‘flexible patrol’ service. This video shares information with the community on the ‘flexible patrol’ service provided when a resident requests patrol at a desired time and place, the police patrols that area at the requested time. This video is currently being aired at the Gyeongsan Lotte Cinema before movies are screened. The REC Club students recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Gyeongsan Police Station. It was a recognition for helping with the safety of the community and residents as members of the community. Kim Wan-gyu (22, Department of Media and Communication, senior), who is the president of the REC Club said, “We had fun producing the videos as part of our club activities, and it was a pleasant surprise to receive this certificate of appreciation.” He added, “If we are given the opportunity, we would like to produce more public benefit videos.”

Pucheon Chairman Lee Si-won recognized for his contributions to the development of the university Department of Commercial Science (Business Administration) class of ‘63 alumni... Commerce and Economics Hall Room 209 named ’Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ Founded fibers company and developed into a global fiber company, received honorary PhD in business administration [September 5, 2018] <The ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ named after the chairperson of Pucheon Co. was opened at the Commerce and Economics Hall Room 209> With the start of the second semester, YU (President Sur Gil-soo) opened the ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ named after Pucheon Chairman, Lee Si-won (73). It aims at honoring his contributions to the development of the Korean economy and the growth of the university. In the afternoon of the 5th, YU held a name plate hanging ceremony for the ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ at room 209 of the YU Commerce and Economics Hall. Next to it is a brass plate with an engraving of Mr. Lee’s face and his major achievements. Chairman Lee, who was from the class of ‘63 at the YU (formerly Daegu University) Department of Commercial Science (currently Dep. of Business Administration) graduated in 1967 and worked in the fibers industry for over 50 years and is a living witness to the history of fibers and textiles in Korea. Mr. Lee founded Pucheon in 1975 and developed it into a fibers company recognized globally for its quality. In honor of his excellent abilities as a businessman, he received an honorary PhD from YU in April of last year. He donated a total of 530 million won including scholarships for his juniors at YU continuing on his selfless support for his alma mater and juniors. Mr. Lee said, “I received an honorary PhD from YU in April and now I even have a lecture room named after me. It is a great honor.” He added, “As a businessman who graduated from YU, I will work harder to contribute in the development of Korea and to become a respected businessman who serves the community.” YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “Students who come to the lecture room for classes will later contribute to society following the tracks of their senior and become a leader of Korea.” He added, “I hope that students who study at the Lee Si-won lecture room will become the second and third Lee Si-won in the future and so later have lecture rooms named after them at YU later.” Meanwhile, YU has been making lecture rooms for those who donate to the development fund to honor the social contribution activities and will of big donators to the college development fund and to spread the culture of donating.

Graduation ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd 58 PhDs, 384 masters’ and 1,128 bachelors’ degrees [August 22, 2018] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held a graduation ceremony for the second semester of the 2017 school year at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd. A total of 1,128 students earned their bachelor’s degree, 384 their master’s degree and 58 their PhD, and among them, 147 international students also received their diplomas (41 bachelors, 91 masters, 15 PhDs). YU President Sur Gil-soo, Graduate School Dean Lee Tae-jin and many professors and faculty attended the graduation ceremony to congratulate the students. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “I would like to applaud the graduates on receiving your honorable diplomas after years of hard work.” He added, “You are now standing on a new start line. I hope that you become a proud member of society and do all that you can in your fields and become leaders of the future of Korea.”

MSIT fosters engineering professionals... Up to 2.7 billion won in national funding for three years Industry-Academic Cooperation Team selects 80 engineering graduates every year to operate project for up to three years Gain lab knowledge and work experience and understand corporate technology needs... Helps with employment and start-ups [August 16, 2018] YU was selected for the ‘2018 Youth TLO (Technology Licensing Office)’ fostering project overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The ‘Youth TLO Fostering Project’ aims at providing work for youths who graduated from engineering and science majors at industry-academic cooperation team technology licensing organizations (TLO, industry-academic cooperation team researcher) to help prepare for employment or start-ups. By being selected for this project, YU will receive 900 million won every year starting this for up to three years for a total of 2.7 billion won and thus select up to 80 people for the TLO every year. <YU participating in the 1st Southeast Region Tech-Biz Conference> This year, the project will employ a total of 4,000 people from 67 colleges in six regions nationwide such as the Seoul region, Chungcheong region, Gangwon region, Daegyeong region, and Honam region as TLO. TLO work in technical marketing activities such as drafting tech brochures, finding companies with potential demand, hosting tech seminars, etc. for transferring technologies possessed by universities to the private sector, as well as lab researcher cooperation and science technology-based start-up activities. The YU Industry-Academic Cooperation Team is planning to operate various programs together with relevant departments such as the school’s employment and start-up support departments not only for the employment and start-ups of graduates of science and engineering majors, but also to improve commercialization of the outstanding technologies possessed by the university. YU Industry-Academic Cooperation Team Director Park Yong-wan said, “Through the youth TLO fostering project, science and engineering students can gain knowledge and work experience regarding lab technologies within the university and by enhancing their understanding on the technological needs of companies, it will help the considerably in preparing for employment or starting up businesses.”

Chairman Jung Tae-il and 40th chairman group, etc donate 150 million won for remodeling 4th floor of the General Alumni Association Hall in Dong-gu, Daegu, medium and large conference room equipped with beam projectors [August 21, 2018] The YU General Alumni Association (Chairman Jung Tae-il) opened the ‘Alumni Sarangbang’ after remodeling. The ‘Alumni Sarangbang’ remodeled the YU General Alumni Association Hall on the fourth floor in Dong-gu, Daegu to three times its past size. The YU General Alumni Association completed remodeling after about two months of construction and held the opening ceremony on August 20. At the ceremony were present Chairman Jung Tae-il, executives, Yeungnam School Foundation Director Han Jae-sook, YU President Sur Gil-soo, and other alumni. The expanded office is comprised of a Sarangbang that YU alumni can use freely as they wish, a medium conference hall (Dalgubeol Hall) that can accommodate 20 people and equipped with beam projectors, etc., and the main conference room (Cheonma Hall) that can accommodate about 60 people. The remodeling construction was paid for by the fervent support of alumni by donating the entire 150 million won for construction by the 40th chairman group launched in March and alumni together with Chairman Jung Tae-il. Chairman Jung Tae-il (center in photo) said, “We remodeled the space so that alumni can visit the alumni office any time to have tea and chat. We warmly welcome alumni to visit.” The YU General Alumni Association was established in 1952 and has a total of 230,000 members. The General Alumni Association Hall was built in its current location in 1995 standing five stories tall. Also, the YU Alumni Scholarship Association that was founded in 1987 has currently raised over 3.6 billion won in total and has been providing the funds as scholarships for students. Chairman Jung also donated 1 billion won in scholarship funds last May.

It was the only private university outside of the Seoul area to be ranked in the top 10. On the 8th, the corporate management performance evaluation site, CEO Score, analyzed 464 CEOs that disclosed their educational history among 341 of the nation’s top 500 companies that submitted business reports. In result, it was found that YU graduated a total of 14 CEOs, placing it in the top 10 as the only private university outside of the Seoul area. These results showed a drop in CEOs from the so-called ‘SKY’ universities of Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University compared to the past, and it was also found that there was an increase in CEOs from universities outside of the Seoul area including YU. The number of CEOs in the top 500 companies who graduated from YU rose from 11 last year (source: CEO Score) to 14 this year. Seoul National University was highest at 104 CEOs, followed by Korea University (53), Yonsei University (41), Hanyang University (22), and Sungkyunkwan University (18) rounding up the top five, while the remainder of the top ten were comprised of YU (14), Pusan National University and Sogang University (16 each), Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (13), and Chung Ang University (10). Meanwhile, the business magazine New Management analyzed the ‘2018 universities of CEOS in Korea’s top 100 companies’, which ranked YU in sixth place. It was the highest ranking for all national and private universities outside of the Seoul Area. In the ‘2018 KOSDAQ CEO universities’ announced by the KOSDAQ Association, YU was ranked 7th, thus showing the YU alumni are currently leading the financial sector of Korea.

Jeon Do-eon (Yongjang Class) and Park Chan-joo (Jangsa Class) take first place YU wins 2 of 7 medals available in the college tournament Continuing to sweep the sand ring in group and individual competitions since last year [August 7, 2018] <YU Ssireum Team Jeon Do-eon (left) and Park Chan-joo (center) who won gold medals at the 55th Presidential Ssireum Championship and Head Coach Heo Yong> The YU Ssireum Team (Coach Heo Yong) won two gold medals at the 55th Presidential Ssireum Championship, once again showing that YU is a powerhouse for college ssireum. The YU Ssireum Team won two of seven golds in the college games held at the Yoon Bong-gil Gymnasium in Yesan, Chungnam from July 24 to 30. Jeon Do-eon (21, Department of Special Physical Education, junior) struck gold in the Yongjang class competition and Park Chan-joo (20, Department of Special Physical Education, sophomore) won first place in the Jangsa class. The YU Ssireum Team Coach Heo Yong said, “The hard work of the athletes preparing for this tournament despite the record-breaking heat this year paid off.” He added, “The university is providing full support despite various difficulties, so we will continue to do our best to make good results.” Meanwhile, the YU Ssireum Team has been winning in group and individual matches in major tournaments since last year, and has thus been receiving attention again as a traditional ssireum powerhouse. It won the group competitoin at the 47th Chairman’s Ssireum Championship and 9th Guryeo Women’s Ssireum Championship and National Collegiate Ssireum Championship held last year, while also taking home two golds in the 2017 ‘71st National Ssireum Championship’, as well as in the individual Jangsa class at the 14th National Haksan Ssireum Championship. It is continuing its storm in the sand ring in both group and individual competitions.

Established the ‘American Alumni Association Scholarship Fund’ with high expectations for many alumni to participate To be used for financial support for YU students planning to study or train in the US [August 7, 2018] <American Alumni Association Chairman Jeon Heung-won (right) hands over 10,000 dollars for scholarships to Chairman Jung Tae-il.> Alumni residing in the Americas (US, Canada) collected scholarship funds for junior YU students. American Alumni Association Chairman Jeon Heung-won (College of Pharmacy, class of ‘58, Honorary Professor at the University of Georgia) met with YU General Alumni Association Chairman Jung Tae-il at the Hotel Interburgo Cymbidium Hall and donated 10,000 dollars for scholarships to be used for YU students. In attendance here were Chariman Jeon Heung-won and his wife and YU alumnus Yoo Jung-ja, former American Alumni Association Chairman Lee Il-geon, Do Soo-hoe, Lee Chan-tae, Vice-chiarman Yoon Min-sook, and former General Alumni Association Secretary General Kang Byung-hee. The scholarship fund donated by Chairman Jeon Heung-won is valuable money gathered by alumni currently in the US and Canada. Aside from scholarship funds donated individually by alumni living in North America to the General Alumni Association, the scholarship funds donated by the American Alumni Association now stands at over 34 million won. From now on, regardless of the amount of scholarship donated by individual alumnus living in North America, plans have been made to unite it into the ‘American Alumni Association Scholarship Fund’. This fund will be used for purposes such as financial support for YU students planning to study or train in the US and Canada. Chairman Jeon said, “We will be prouder as graduates of YU when YU is known as a university with strong alumni bonds and love for the school,” while adding, “When more alumni continue to show interest and add to our efforts, it can act as a cornerstone for our alma mater YU to become one of the most prestigious private universities in Korea.” Jeon also added, “We trust that large scholarship fund contributed by General Alumni Association Chairman Jung Tae-il will set an excellent example for all YU alumni,” and also added, “In order to provide the opportunity in public benefit projects for alumni who moved to the US and Canada to achieve their dreams and have actually reaped successes, both big and small, we established the ‘American Alumni Scholarship Fund’. We have lived receiving various benefits and learning from the culture of donation from the mainstream society here and so I trust that the alumni that understand the purpose of establishing the scholarship fund will be happy to participate.” Chairman Jeon also stated, “Successful organizations have a rich pool of human resources who pursue and develop new things so I ask that we contribute our efforts for a scholarship fund for our juniors and to gather our wisdom to become a ‘proud alumni association’ that can raise the pride of all of us.” Chairman Jung Tae-il responded, “I extend my deepest gratitude for this valuable scholarship by our alumni the US who are thoughtful of our alumni association and juniors at YU.” He added, “Alone, I am weak and so I ask for the active participation and support from our alumni.” Meanwhile, the YU American Alumni Association held its founding meeting in LA in October 2002 and has been holding general meetings biannually in different parts of North America such as Chicago, Toronto and New York, playing a big role for not only improving friendships among alumni in the US, but also for a global YU network. It held its eight general meeting Atlanta in May of last year.
